Aaliyah Dani Haughton was born January 16, 1979 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York.
Aaliyah’s Uncle Barry Hankerson who was the CEO and owner of a management company Blackground Enterprises played a major role in bringing singing sensation, Aliyah on the top. Barry Hankerson was the manager of Aliyah as well as her Ex-mentor R Kelly. He introduced both of them and the production of “Age Aint Nothing But A Number” got a clear path to move ahead.
Aaliyah was caught by the eyes of people at the tender age of 15 when she came out with her first single “Back and Forth” and it topped the list at number on the hot 100 singles chart. As a result of this, Svengali, R. Kelly and his track “Your Body's Callin" were dethroned from the top spot. After a very short interval, her new album was released under the Jive Records from which another five songs became top five gold singles.
This not only was a remake of an Isley Brothers classic but also flexed the octave range and versatility of Aliyah. Her version of “At Your best (You Are Love)” vibrated the airwaves with great frequency charmed its listeners with its tumultuous and sensuous harmonies. Some other singles followed which were light hip-pop jams "Down with the Clique" and the adulterated title track. The provocative title and lyrics of the album and mystery of Aaliyah’s age created a spark of anger in the media about an alleged union between Aaliyah and her then mentor. That incident was something threatening to Aliyah’s prosperous career.
There was a lot of rumor against Aaliyah and R.Kelly but till this day no one is sure of their union. Nevertheless, Aaliyah denies that she ever got married to R. Kelly and R. Kelly did not comment at all. Additionally, Aaliyah says, the motive she kept her age on the low was because she wanted the people to acknowledge her for her music
and not only for on her age. Despite the rumors, critics spurted and Entertainment Weekly had this to say (6/17/94) ...Imagine En Vogue packed into one teenage body and backed by hip-hop Svengali R. Kelly, and you have Aaliyah...a promising start.
By the 1996 came Aaliyah was preparing for her next release “One in a Million”. She was really excited about her this album. “One in a Million” proved to be a significant material to establish the fact that Aaliyah is singer who is quite mature and full of strength. It changed the music industry’s concept entirely about Aaliyah. Along with this maturity, Aaliyah carried the once underground hit-makers Missy/Timbaland to new heights.
This reverberation they would concoct on “One In A Million”, would take the music industry by storm. Hit after heart-beating hit would follow, ultimately reaching the #1 spot on the hot 100 singles chart with her 1st sophomore single, the sexy, seductive, and taunt, "If Your girl Only Knew" and the other singles radio weighty as well. Before the close of '97, One In A Million (a #1 radio play single also) would go double platinum+ with the success of 4 Page Letter, Hot Like Fire, & The One I Gave My Heart To.
